The top ten trends in kitchen and bathrooms for 2016 are presented by Kitchen & Bath Business in their February 8, 2016 news feature, Trends Shaping the Industry:
For the 2016 NKBA Design Trends Survey, more than 450 NKBA members from across the country reported the materials, product types and design styles they specified during the past year in response to changing consumer preferences. Ideal for identifying trends in kitchens in the $20,000 to $49,000 price range and up, as well as bathrooms in the $10,000 to $30,000 range and up, these findings help spotlight dominant preferences in several different types of households.
When asked to think of a positive, ambitious and talented employee at Innovative Kitchen & Bath to highlight on our blog … Jim immediately came to mind. I’ve worked with Jim for over 7 years in a variety of roles, and Jim has always stood out as an exceptional employee and someone our customers enjoy having in their home. We have recently promoted him to the Project Engineer role – this is something both he and I are excited about (and our customers will be, too).
Jim worked in cabinet shops and helped his dad in his contractor business in high school. I had the opportunity to work with him in a cabinet shop, as well as on several remodel projects since then. Jim has become quite skilled and knowledgeable in the remodel business – this is a huge benefit to our customers, as well as our team.
In his new role, Jim will take the detailed measurements of the space, once a customer has decided to hire Innovative Kitchen & Bath for the remodel. With these detailed measurements, Jim will engineer the project, then order the necessary materials. Jim’s knowledge and attention to detail ensure our projects start on-time and that we have all of the necessary components. Jim is also involved behind the scene once our Project Manager is on-site at the customer’s home during construction. Jim supports the Project Manager to make sure the project is on track and to source any additional materials that may be needed. Jim also brings an enthusiasm to a project – the homeowners often comment that Jim is just as excited about their project as they are!
When I asked Jim about his experience working with Innovative Kitchen & Bath, he shared this:
“Working for Rob is awesome. He trusts his employees and does not micromanage – this allows us to learn, grow and take responsibility for our jobs. I also like that Rob and the design team are always learning about cutting edge technology to incorporate into their discussions with customers. For example, right now there are a lot of new lighting options for kitchens and bathrooms – during the engineering and installation, I get to learn about these and see how happy the customers are with the lighting we recommended. I also really enjoy meeting and getting to know our customers. Each family is unique and it is enjoyable to be in their home to share in a small piece of helping them make it a more enjoyable space for their family.
As for my favorite project – we recently completed a kitchen remodel for a professional couple in Woodinville that included glass-like reflective cabinets, high tech appliances, unique lighting and complex tile work. There were some challenges with removing a wall and hiding the beam, as well as installing low vault lighting in a very minimal way.
Working with the homeowners to find a solution that worked was a lot of fun and very satisfying!
On a personal note, when my wife and I found out we were expecting triplets, Rob and the Innovative Kitchen & Bath team rallied their friends and family to gather an enormous amount of toys, clothes and baby gear to help our family out.
Rob really cares about his employees and he made sure we were well taken care of and we are extremely grateful.”
The homeowners of this Woodinville house liked the layout of their kitchen and they had beautiful wood floors, but they wanted to upgrade the kitchen to a more modern look, as well as update their appliances. This is a great example of a “good candidate” for a cabinet refacing project. In addition, there was an opportunity to replace the countertops and make some minor adjustments to the cabinets, to add functionality.
Here are photos of the kitchen before the project began:
During project preparation and construction, the floors are covered with plywood and builders paper for protection, and the room is enclosed with plastic to contain dust from the project:
Here is a summary of the changes to this kitchen in Woodinville:
- Modern cabinet doors with upgraded hardware (replaced basic cabinet doors/hardware)
- Custom built large drawers to provide more functionality (replaced standard lower cupboard doors with shelves)
- Marble countertops (replaced 4×4 tile countertops)
- Bi-fold pantry doors (replaced builders grade pantry doors)
- Appliances with cabinet fronts added to blend in with the rest of the cabinetry (replaced original/mismatched appliances)
- Corbels added to island
- Relocated appliance garage next to pantry for more functionality
The benefits to the homeowner on this kitchen cabinet refacing project included:
- Quick turn-around to complete the project (approximately 2 weeks) and less disruption to their home
- Reduction in waste by reusing existing cabinet frames
- No modifications to flooring, since the cabinets stayed in the same place
- More functional kitchen (drawers, appliance garage)
- A kitchen “upgrade” at a reduced cost compared to a complete remodel

This 1920’s Monroe home had a large kitchen, but was configured in an inefficient manner and without venting for the stove, plus the homeowners were ready to update the cabinets and overall look.
As you can see in the photos below, Innovative Kitchen & Bath completed extensive work to remodel this kitchen.
We built a new island with a bar with a Maple butcher-block countertop. We moved the stove and oven into the island and added a vent above the stove. We also moved the refrigerator to the corner where the stove had been, and built custom cabinets around the refrigerator. Because we moved the stove, we were able to add extra cupboards and counter space (always a plus). We installed new Quartz countertops with a simple backsplash of the same material, as well as new Vinyl tile’s on the floor. The new oval sink and stainless steel kitchen faucet are not fancy, but very classy – they match the new hardware on the cabinets, as well. We built and installed new cabinets with large drawers (more accessible). The homeowner was tired of the blue walls, so we helped them pick these warm orange and yellow shades of paint. In addition to high quality materials and an updated look, the overall functionality of this Monroe kitchen was improved.
The owners of this Monroe home were thrilled and provided this feedback for us:
“This was my first experience remodeling. It was with great trepidation that I started my kitchen remodel after hearing numerous stories about everything that could go wrong. My experience was so far from those stories that my friends are amazed that I had nothing to complain about. That’s right – Innovative Kitchen and Bath were on the money, on time, and a pleasure to work with. The result was stunning and the experience was way more pain free than I dared imagine. That’s not to say an complete make-over of my kitchen was easy, but my project manager, Will, was so thoughtful and considerate as well as competent, that the inconvenience was easy to manage.
I was impressed with Rob when I first met him at the Seattle Home Show. He was sincere and not one of the “run you over” salespersons I encountered at all the other booths. Rob didn’t try to oversell me, but instead focused on helping me clarify my objectives within my budget. When Barb came to do the free consultation, she was personable and definitely engaged and willing to listen. Her suggestions were critical to the end result so her input was valuable to me even before I was a client. Throughout the entire process everyone I dealt with was responsive and gave me honest input so it was easy to make the quick decisions that always come along when something unexpected comes up.
I highly recommend IKB for a quality job that meets your budget but exceeds your dreams.”
