Caring for granite countertops is easy – but you need to know a few tips.
There are some home improvements that produce a more lasting impression than others. Granite countertops make a big statement, and they look amazing. If you are thinking about upgrading your kitchen, wet-bar or bathroom to granite countertops you will be thrilled with their durability. Granite not only adds elegance to any space, but it is also beautiful, heat resistant, extremely durable.
Everyday Care
It is easy to maintain granite countertops. They just need cleaning each day with a damp cloth which will remove the daily accumulation of dust, crumbs or powders. If you prefer, you can use a granite cleaner. You may need to regularly disinfect your kitchen countertops where food preparation takes place, as bacteria and germs can get into the tiny pores and crevices which cannot be felt and are normally not visible to the naked eye. To disinfect your kitchen countertops, you simply need to clean with hot soapy water.
You can also clean the granite countertops in the bathroom in the same way. Because you need to avoid using acidic cleaners which can possibly bleach or stain granite, we recommend using a mild dish soap with a neutral ph.
Applying Sealant
Although granite is mostly stain-resistant it is not entirely liquid-proof. Water may soak into the granite surface leaving a water-stain which will gradually disappear as it dries. An oil-based liquid spill may leave a temporary stain which can be removed by using a special paste to draw the oil out of the stone. To prevent your beautiful granite from being spoilt by all types of spilled liquids, we recommend sealing your stone. Most home improvement stores stock sealer kits which are relatively easy to apply. For proper performance, most DIY sealers will need to be given time to cure.
Some homeowners prefer to obtain professional assistance from a licensed contractor who is able to procure higher grade commercial sealing products that often have warranties up to 15 years.
It is important to invest in things that will last for years to come and, at the same time, contribute to the beauty of your dwelling space, so if you have decided to upgrade to granite countertops, you will want to keep your new surfaces looking timeless to protect your investment.
